Tarrant County, Texas State Court Records

Tarrant County court records are the case details, documents, and evidence generated or collected during legal proceedings in the county. Case documents include filings, judgments, financial statements, witness lists, opinions, and other paperwork that individuals can obtain from the court. Case details are names of parties, case numbers, dates, and other information that can be used to identify cases.

Some information in court records may be part of, or produced by, other county government activities. Examples include bond details that appear within arrest records and birth certificates filed during probate proceedings.

Record custodians, such as the Tarrant County District Clerk, County Clerk, and clerks of municipal and justice of the peace courts, provide the means to view case files and obtain copies of court documents.

Are Tarrant County Court Records Public?

Yes. Common laws and court rules (e.g, Rule 76a of the Texas Rules of Civil Procedure) grant access to most court records created in Tarrant County.

However, certain records, such as the following, are protected by law and court rules:

  • Sensitive personal information, including social security numbers and medical data
  • Sealed court documents
  • Banking details, such as credit card numbers and account statements
  • Child custody and visitation information
  • Expunged criminal records
  • Unexecuted search warrants

It should be noted that entities authorized by law, such as parties to a case and government organizations, may access certain restricted court records, depending on the applicable laws governing those records.

Tarrant County Court Records Search

Tarrant County court records are available through record custodians, who offer varying search and record request methods. That is why individuals must first determine which office is responsible for the type of records they seek.

District Clerk Records Search

The District Clerk's office is the District Court's records custodian. It maintains case files and information from civil matters worth more than $500, divorce and family proceedings, juvenile cases, and felony prosecutions.

Individuals can view files from these cases and request copies in person at any District Clerk's office location that offers court document lookup services. Viewing files onsite is free, provided that members of the public run the search themselves. Searches performed by clerk staff and requests for copies attract different fees.

One can also order copies of court records by mailing requests to the following addresses:

Disposed Family Law/Civil Case
200 East Weatherford Street
Fort Worth, TX 76196
Attn: Records

Felony Criminal Case
401 West Belknap Street
Fort Worth, TX 76196
Attn: Criminal Section

The office also provides an online resource, the District Clerk Subscriber Access (DCSA) system, for viewing court records. Individuals are expected to register on the website for a fee and pay a separate monthly subscription fee to view case file information.

County Clerk Records Search

The County Clerk maintains records created during Class A and Class B misdemeanors, as well as civil proceedings valued at above $500 and not exceeding $250,000.

The Tarrant County Criminal Court Docket, an online search system, allows members of the public to view upcoming criminal case events. Anyone can query the system by entering the case number or defendant name. The search results contain the case number, event description and date, offense, docket number, custody status, and attorney details.

For civil cases handled by the County Courts at Law, basic details are available via the Tarrant County Records search website. The search process involves selecting All CCL Courts from the Select a Location drop-down, clicking Case Records Search, and entering any accepted search parameter (case number, party name, attorney details, or filing date).

Individuals can purchase copies of these records by emailing their purchase requests to the clerk's office. The office also responds to purchase inquiries at (817) 884-1066.

Additionally, the County Clerk's office allows the public to request civil case records online through its County Courts at Law Documents web portal.

Justice of the Peace Records Search

Justice of the Peace Courts in Tarrant County preside over Class C misdemeanors, civil cases worth up to $20,000, and other minor matters, such as small claims, evictions, and debt disputes.

One can contact or visit each court to obtain copies of case records. However, given there are 8 different Justices of the Peace, it is worth confirming the specific adjudicating justice. To do that, one can select All JP Courts on the Tarrant County Court Records Search site, click Case Records Search, and enter a search term. The results will display the specific court where the case was heard, along with other details, such as events and hearings, case type, filing date, and defendant information.

Municipal Court Records Search

Municipal courts, like Justices of the Peace, handle Class C misdemeanors, but only within specific city limits. Each court makes provisions for public records access. For example, the Arlington Municipal Court provides an online case search system through a third-party vendor.

One can also contact the municipal court to ask about obtaining copies of court records.
